Course Description
This course is designed to provide the maintenance technician with the skills necessary to maintain a Sapphire test system. Training includes how to diagnose system malfunctions to the board level. All calibration procedures and limited hands-on troubleshooting experience to board level will be provided.
This course covers the Sapphire test system to the block diagram level and shows how to diagnose system malfunctions with the aid of system diagnostics.
Prerequisites
This course is for a digital test systems technician. Students must have :
- A.S. electronics technology or equivalent training.
- Minimum of three months experience maintaining digital test systems.
- Knowledge of basic Windows OS
Recommended
- 6 months experience assisting in the maintenance of Automated Test Equipment
- English - written and spoken

Content
Lecture/Laboratory
This course will cover the Sapphire test system to the block diagram level and show how to diagnose system malfunctions with the aid of system diagnostics.
- Sapphire system architecture and specifications.
- Overview of the tester controller and system status monitor.
- Block diagram discussion of the PCBs that contain the DC, and high speed subsystems and the diagnostic programs used to verify the status of the boards.
- AC and DC power distribution.
The laboratory portion of this course (approx. 50%) covers:
- Physical location of hardware in the system.
- Learn how to replace an instrument properly
- Execution and interpretation of diagnostic programs.
- System calibration procedures.
- Perform system preventative maintenance.
Goals
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- State the major function(s) of each PCB.
- Identify the power source for each card.
- Perform an orderly power on and off of the Sapphire test system.
- Locate various diagnostic files.
- Replace an instrument properly
- Perform all calibration for each board.
- Execute diagnostic programs and interpret their outputs to isolate failures to which board.
- Perform all preventative maintenance procedures.
Completion Requirements
Certificates will be awarded based upon the following:
- Completion of all laboratory assignments.
- Must attend and participate in all class sessions.
