Vanguard Basic Applications - Course #0100

Course Length

4-5 days, depending on the number of participants

Applicable Testers

Vanguard, Gemini MS

Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the Vanguard digital verification system using the graphical windows interface (IMS Tools). The same environment applies to the Gemini mixed signal tester.

Vanguard Basic User Training is the starting point for writing test programs through any interface, regardless of whether you are using the graphical windowing system, Java, Perl, C or C++.

This course is designed as a 4-day, instructor-led, hands-on training program. Students work in small groups to develop and run tests for a real digital device. To ensure that everyone has access to equipment, class size is limited to 8 participants.

In the course, students develop and conduct tests to verify functionality and characterize the timing of a simple digital device. The Vanguard architecture and features are explained in the context of how they are typically used. The exercises are designed to encourage experimentation, allow "what if" analysis, and explore debugging techniques.

The course consists of these modules:

  • Introduction to Vanguard
  • Vanguard's Hardware Architecture
  • Safety Overview
  • Installing Fixtures and Powering Up the System
  • Vanguard's Software Architecture
  • Starting A Sever Program
  • Choosing a Tester Server or Emulator Server
  • Shutting Down the Server Program
  • Starting the IMS Tools Client Program
  • Entering Signal Names and Descriptions
  • Vanguard Fixturing and the Device: Fixture Window
  • Single Wire vs. Fly-By Fixturing
  • Setting DC Levels
  • Specifying Timing Relationships
  • Pattern Data and the Pattern Window
  • Advanced Timing Topics
  • Types of Tests and the Test: Device Test Window
  • Vanguard's Shmoo Utility Program
  • Building More Complex Test: the Vanguard Sequencer Program

Required Skills/Knowledge

To participate in this class, you should already be familiar with digital device test methods and terminology, and be able to use the Sun/Linux workstation and Unix commands to create and edit files.
